The TrendChart workshops offer the opportunity to compare and analyse in depth the innovation policies and support schemes of the Member States. The workshops provide policy makers with the opportunity to embark on "intelligent benchmarking", taking into account the diversity of approaches and the differences in national context.

Together with the National Innovation Policy Database and the "European Innovation Scoreboard", the workshops provide a comprehensive picture of innovation policies across Europe and implements the "open co-ordination approach" laid down by the Lisbon Council in 2000. The ultimate aim of the TrendChart is to enhance transnational policy learning and the overall coherence of innovation policies in Europe. The workshop organisers directly pursue this aim using input from the two main TrendChart products mentioned above.
